As noted on the ECA web site (www.ecasite.org), this theme encourages students to celebrate, in poster form, the roots of ECA and reflect on the significant changes that have shaped the current state of our discipline.

Papers submitted for poster sessions may address any area of communication and may be analytical, critical, empirical, philosophical, or theoretical in nature. Poster sessions allow students to interact face-to-face with conference attendees. The posters act as visual representations of student research. Imaginative and creative displays are encouraged.

The deadline is December 15th, 2008 to make it easier for students to submit an excellent paper from the fall semester. Faculty members should encourage students to submit excellent work from this semester or previous semesters. Many future communication scholars present their first conference papers at ECA poster sessions. This experience is an excellent way for students to begin their professional conference activity. This experience also serves as an excellent introduction to ECA.

Submissions should be sent electronically to the 2009 Poster Session Planner, Adam C. Earnheardt (Youngstown State University), at acearnheardt@ysu.edu.

Submissions should include:

A detachable cover page with title, author(s) name(s), affiliation(s), and contact information such as mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address;

A one-page abstract of the paper;

A statement of professional responsibility (see below) *.

In addition, papers should:

Be clearly marked as "undergraduate" or "graduate" level;

Include an indication if the paper is a "debut";

Not exceed 25 double-spaced pages.

*Statement of Professional Responsibility: In submitting the attached paper, I/we recognize this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/we agree to present this paper if it is accepted and programmed. I/we further recognize all who attend and present at ECA's annual meeting must register and pay required fees. If the paper is a multi-authored paper, please indicate who will be presenting at the convention.

Please send papers electronically to acearnheardt@ysu.edu.

Adam C. What impact do media have on the forging and sustaining of cultural identities? How can the humanities guide us to understand why "living traditions" are at the nexus of questions about the global diaspora? This three-day event will feature paper and roundtable sessions, an International concert, and culminate in a tour of Newport, Rhode Island, a significant immigrant destination for nearly 400 years.

The symposium is a plenary experience; no overlapping presentations will be scheduled. Symposium participants hear all presentations and stay for the entire program in order to build the kind of feedback and informal discussions that mark the nature of this event. Most presentations are given a time slot of 20 minutes. This format allows for a respondent and audience questions. We are very pleased that the proceedings of this symposium will be published in our new peer-reviewed journal Reason & Respect: civil discourse in a global context, to be published beginning Fall 2008.

The organizers of the 2008 Symposium invite the submission of position papers addressing one of the following topics:

· Locating Interdisciplinarity: Technology and the Humanities

· Real Places-Virtual Spaces: Creating Cultural Communities

· Exploring Gender at the Crossroads of Media and Culture

· Seeing Diaspora: Media, Community and Visual Rhetoric

Paper Submissions
Authors should submit complete papers (not to exceed 20 pages). As these papers will be blind peer-reviewed, please follow the submission instructions carefully:

Papers should have a top sheet with the Title, Name of the author(s), Email address, Affiliation and Position.

The abstract section should give a clear sense of the scope of the paper and the method of inquiry used.

Please remove all identifying information from the body of the paper.
Please EMAIL your paper submission to roconnell@rwu.edu.

All papers must received by June 15, 2008.
Authors will be notified by July 15, 2008.
Registration is now OPEN
new media symposium logo 2008 Register for the Symposium
Regsitration is open for all participants and attendees.

Accommodation is not available on campus as classes will be in session. However, there are a number of small hotels and bed & breakfast inns in the Bristol area. Please check the Accommodation page on the website for location and pricing. We are negotiating a limited number of rooms at the Bristol Harbor Inn for a special conference rate. Details to follow.

Symposium Details
New Media & the Global Diaspora
Roger Williams University
One Old Ferry Road
Bristol, Rhode Island 02809
October 2-4, 2008
On-site check-in begins at 12:00 pm Thursday.
Deadlines
PAPER SUBMISSIONS:
June 15, 2008

REGISTRATION:
August 1, 2008 - Participants
September 15, 2008 - Attendees
New Media & the Global Diaspora
Roger Williams University
One Old Ferry Road
Bristol, Rhode Island 02809

We hope you will join us for our 2nd Symposium on New Media & the Global Diaspora.

Roxanne M. We have recently begun to publish non-traditional forms of scholarship including films and interactive media. If any of your students are interested in publishing in these areas, please pass on the following call for works:

RMCR is pleased to announce that it seeks nontraditional forms of scholarship to broaden the scope of the journal and to address a growing enthusiasm for technological innovations in the communication discipline. The electronic format of the journal offers an outlet for a wide range of submissions. Scholars should consider the full spectrum of critically informed creative possibilities that online publishing can offer. Works that would serve graduate students as
beginning scholars and teachers are sought. Examples include recorded technologically enhanced performance pieces, linear and interactive documentaries, e-games, interactive websites, visual and digital rhetoric.

Given the innovative nature of such submissions, traditional review processes may not apply. RMCR will work with the author/developer to ensure an impartial review of the project. All entries and suggestions should be directed to Rulon Wood at rulon.wood@utah.edu

Deadline: June 1

Dr. Robert J. People cite Wikipedia's collaborative nature as being suspect. The common assumption is that anyone can publish anything at anytime. Yet, this simply isn't true. Wikipedia follows the same logic as academic peer-reviewed journals in the adoption of its content. Content is tentatively adopted or altered subject to approval by other users and moderators. As with all knowledge, content in Wikipedia is only as good as the people providing the content. A recent study provides some evidence that content is credible. This year's workshop, "Awakening the Visionary Film Artist: A Weeklong Intensive," will explore the emerging genre of "conscious media," and provide participants with the screenwriting and contemplative skills to develop innovating and inspirational film projects. Media professionals, media/film school faculty and graduate students interested in integrating their personal values with filmmaking-whether as screenwriters, directors or producers-are encouraged to attend. This year marks the 12th year since its revival. As with past years, the rules are as follows:

Contestants must be currently enrolled in a Public Speaking course at McDaniel College. The four contestants are selected by their peers and instructor.

The speech must be a ten-minute persuasive speech. The list of banned topics that apply to the Public Speaking course also applies to the Public Speaking Contest.

Since the event focuses on speaking skills, the use of visual aids is highly discouraged.

The final ranking of contestants is determined by a three-judge panel of faculty members.

Prizes are as follows:

First Place:    $60.00 cash
Championship Trophy
Champion’s name inscribed on the Communication Department’s Plaque

Second Place:    $45.00    cash

Third Place:    $35.00 cash

Fourth Place:    $25.00 cash

An assortment of beverages and light snacks will be provided prior to the event.

Please note: All students that are currently enrolled in a Public Speaking course are required to attend the event. If you have other obligations, you will need to make the necessary arrangements. Since attendance at the event is a requirement, failure to attend will have a negative affect on your course grade.

Dr. Robert J. Clearly, every member of the department sees teaching as their primary responsibility at McDaniel, and each one is clearly interested in teaching well, improving their teaching, and meeting students’ academic needs. We see this dedication exemplified through activities such as Professors Lemieux and Slade working through their summer breaks to redesign biology laboratory space into a working television studio. When asked about this volunteer time, both Lemieux and Slade remarked that although a course release would have been a welcome reward, both were excited about the contribution they had made, and both were proud of the outcome. Likewise, both of these professors have participated in the McDaniel Budapest program, and Professor Slade’s efforts in setting up a working video editing studio in Budapest are extraordinary. In addition, Professor Vance advises the college radio station, Professor Lemieux serves on the APC, Professor Trader is preparing to resurrect the Information track in the Communication major, and Professor Meyer has begun important translation work in her professional activity. All of these efforts, coupled with their rigorous course loads and heavy advising ratios (35:1 as compared to the college’s average of approximately 13:1) impress us as extraordinary. This department is very hard working.

A hard working department should be expected to produce a rigorous curriculum, and the McDaniel Communication Department has done just that. The curriculum is strong, covering many important aspects of the field. Despite this variety, however, the curriculum is focused, allowing students to understand how the field of communication can be conceptualized, and how the courses they take fit into this vision. Because the discipline of communication is so broad, the McDaniel department has been wise to focus their curriculum on the social science perspective of messages, in particular, production, reception and analysis of messages. In addition, the department’s focus on film theory and analysis, along with video and television production, is both standard in the field and certainly desirable in a small liberal arts college. Despite the legitimate concern that faculty colleagues outside of the discipline might have about the “technical” or “pre-professional” nature of some of the courses, the Committee found that these courses were in fact firmly grounded in the liberal arts, combining skills-related training with liberal arts goals such as ethical, aesthetic, and democratically-oriented media production. For instance, Professor Slade’s media writing and production courses are deliberately designed and taught with lower tech equipment so that students can focus on the writing and speech of storytelling rather than the “bells and whistles” of technology.

While the focus of the department is tight, the variety of courses is impressive. Each department member, as mentioned, prepares and delivers a wide variety of courses each year,offering students many different opportunities for exploring their own intellectual curiosities and academic needs. A related strength of the Communication program is that this well-designed curriculum is delivered and thoughtfully constructed for what we unanimously considered extraordinary rigor. The requirement of two four-credit-hour research methods courses is, in our experience, unique to McDaniel, and is extremely impressive. As a committee, we have examined the methods courses quite closely by asking many questions and reviewing the syllabi. The courses cover a great deal of ground in a semester’s time, similar to the methods courses that we experienced as master’s students. We were impressed with the faculty’s expectations of their students in these courses, and even more impressed with the students’ acceptance of this requirement. We were surprised that no students had negative comments about the research requirements, and in fact, a few of them explained their projects to us with enthusiasm.

Following up on the two-course methods requirement, the Senior Seminar is also extremely rigorous. All graduating communication students are required to complete a research project or create an original film production. This important capstone project is also not found at other liberal arts colleges (including ours). The Seminar speaks to the commitment of the faculty in the department, since it essentially involves ten to twelve independent studies each time a faculty member teaches the senior seminar. The faculty report that the students choose to design projects quite evenly across qualitative, quantitative and creative/film orientations, suggesting that student interests are quite balanced across the entire spectrum of the major. Students who complete McDaniel’s Communication Program will be extremely well prepared for both graduate school and media-related professions because of their ability to systematically analyze and create messages.

We believe that much of the success of the department is due to the faculty’s warm relationships with one another. These are hard-working colleagues who seem to genuinely enjoy their work, their time together as a department, and their commitment to one another and their students. This is evidenced by the very design of their department offices, with a commissioned piece of artwork on the wall and the business card displays of their graduates. The professional and personal rapport among the faculty should be noticed and celebrated at McDaniel, as we saw it as one of the most remarkable qualities of this small group. They work with few resources, and they do it happily, professionally, and extraordinarily well."

Dr. Robert J.
