Call for Papers

The 2008 New Media & the Global Diaspora Symposium at Roger Williams University is an interdisciplinary humanities conference addressing the global migrations of the past 100 years and the role media has played in transmitting "living traditions," particularly as these traditions are subject to loss, gain, and interpretation. What impact do media have on the forging and sustaining of cultural identities? How can the humanities guide us to understand why "living traditions" are at the nexus of questions about the global diaspora? This three-day event will feature paper and roundtable sessions, an International concert, and culminate in a tour of Newport, Rhode Island, a significant immigrant destination for nearly 400 years.

The symposium is a plenary experience; no overlapping presentations will be scheduled. Symposium participants hear all presentations and stay for the entire program in order to build the kind of feedback and informal discussions that mark the nature of this event. Most presentations are given a time slot of 20 minutes. This format allows for a respondent and audience questions. We are very pleased that the proceedings of this symposium will be published in our new peer-reviewed journal Reason & Respect: civil discourse in a global context, to be published beginning Fall 2008.

The organizers of the 2008 Symposium invite the submission of position papers addressing one of the following topics:

· Locating Interdisciplinarity: Technology and the Humanities

· Real Places-Virtual Spaces: Creating Cultural Communities

· Exploring Gender at the Crossroads of Media and Culture

· Seeing Diaspora: Media, Community and Visual Rhetoric

Call for Papers: Rock Music on Film and Video Conference

We invite panel and individual-paper proposals for the Rock Music on Film and Video Conference, to be held at Plymouth State University (Plymouth, New Hampshire) October 10-11, 2008.

The members of the conference committee are seeking contributions that examine the diverse uses of rock music in noteworthy cinematic and televisual artifacts, from any historical era and from any area across the globe. Possible topics include (but are certainly not limited to) film sound and the cinematic star vehicle; rock music as subject; rock and music videos; direct cinema, cinema verite, and the "rockumentary"; the rock musical; and rock music as soundtrack and genre device. Participants are encouraged to interpret the conference theme broadly and innovatively. Individual presentations will be limited to 20 minutes in length.

We encourage submissions from scholars, educators, and students at all levels, and from disciplines including anthropology, communication, cultural studies, film studies, history, LGBT studies, media studies, popular culture, sociology, and television studies. Given adequate participant interest and high-quality submissions, we intend to publish selected papers (with author's permission) in a special anthology pertaining to the conference theme. As a bonus, please note that the conference dates correspond with the ideal time to enjoy New England's breathtaking fall foliage!

Persons submitting individual-paper proposals are asked to submit a one-page abstract with complete contact information (name, institutional affiliation, mail and e-mail addresses, daytime telephone number). Panel proposals (featuring three paper-presentations total) should include panel title, brief description of panel theme, name of the panel chair, one-page abstracts of each paper in the panel, and complete contact information for each presenter on the panel (name, institutional affiliation, mail and e-mail addresses, daytime telephone number). In order to be considered, all proposals must be received no later than July 7, 2008.

Please mail or e-mail conference proposals to: Rock Music on Film and Video Conference, Attn: Kylo-Patrick Hart, Department of Communication and Media Studies, Plymouth State University, 17 High Street, MSC 60, Plymouth, NH 03264; krhart@plymouth.edu

For specific inquiries prior to submitting a proposal, please contact Kylo-Patrick Hart at (603) 535-3122 or krhart@plymouth.edu

Student Publishing Opportunity

The Rocky Mountain Communication Review is an online, peer reviewed student-run journal that is published by the University of Utah Department of Communication. We have recently begun to publish non-traditional forms of scholarship including films and interactive media. If any of your students are interested in publishing in these areas, please pass on the following call for works:

RMCR is pleased to announce that it seeks nontraditional forms of scholarship to broaden the scope of the journal and to address a growing enthusiasm for technological innovations in the communication discipline. The electronic format of the journal offers an outlet for a wide range of submissions. Scholars should consider the full spectrum of critically informed creative possibilities that online publishing can offer. Works that would serve graduate students as
beginning scholars and teachers are sought. Examples include recorded technologically enhanced performance pieces, linear and interactive documentaries, e-games, interactive websites, visual and digital rhetoric.

Given the innovative nature of such submissions, traditional review processes may not apply. RMCR will work with the author/developer to ensure an impartial review of the project. All entries and suggestions should be directed to Rulon Wood at rulon.wood@utah.edu

Deadline: June 1
